construction updates
June 2010
The construction phase of the SAIT Trades and Technology Complex project currently remains on schedule.
Construction details by building:
South Wing (Adjacent to existing Power Plant), Occupancy September 2011
Second level suspended slab forming, mechanical, and rebar installation is complete. Second level concrete slab is now poured.
Concrete forming support structure currently on level one will be removed this week and raised to the second level. The concrete forming systems, which have been specially constructed for the Trades and Technology Complex, are designed on a modular basis which in turn are based on a uniform structural grid that has been incorporated throughout all buildings of the Complex. This means that the concrete formwork is interchangeable between buildings and each section will be reused up to 28 times. This dramatically improves the productivity and efficiencies of the superstructure construction from the typical free form hand built systems used elsewhere.
Sanitary and storm drainage line tie-ins are now complete for the entire South Wing building. Interior mechanical and electrical system rough-in installations are ongoing. Mechanical integration work within the SAIT power plant is now complete for South Wing connections.
Aldred Centre (Formerly Centre Wing), Occupancy September 2012
Sub-grade foundation piling for the Aldred Centre will be completed this week. Piling for this building initially started in February of this year and despite numerous sub-surface obstructions, significant weather related delays and a logistically challenging site, the construction team has completed all of the critical path scheduled piling on time.
Grade beam/pile cap forming and pouring along west and south perimeter walls continues this week and will continue for the next two months.
Final grading and base liner installations are underway in sub-grade section “C” (basement level, south section). Concrete slab on grade in this lower level is scheduled to be poured this week.
Tower Crane #1 (close to corner of 11th St and 16th Ave) is to be installed by July 15 pending the demobilization of the piling crews.
West Wing (Former Colonel James Walker Building) Occupancy September 2012
Structural piling continues this week with installation of concrete pile caps on east piles.
Detailed excavation for buried services is ongoing.
The sub-grade access ramp, which is currently along the north shoring wall, is being relocated to the west in order to facilitate future concrete pumping operations and to maintain a clear emergency roadway between Thomas Riley “D” Wing and the new West Wing building. Current parking spaces dedicated to motorcycles (East of Clayton Carroll) will be temporarily removed.
Tower crane #6 is scheduled to be installed prior to August 15.
Thomas Riley Building
In preparation of next year’s selective demolitions in and around the Thomas Riley building, abatement programs within the main corridor (food services and SAIT space seating areas) will occur this summer from July 12 until August 20. Discussions are ongoing with various departments and summer camp programmers to work out the restricted access details. Special announcements will be posted shortly that will provide all closure details.
Thanks to everyone for your continued cooperation during construction of SAIT’s exciting new Trades and Technology Complex.
