THE CHALLENGE

Alberta's and Canada's economic health is threatened by a severe shortage of 77,000 skilled workers in the coming decade.

The approaching labour crisis will be caused by a scarcity of young people entering careers in trades and technology to replace a generation of highly skilled baby boomers in a variety of professions.

Industry, government and independent researchers say there is increasing evidence that the skilled-worker shortage will get worse as the Alberta economy continues to rebound and grow.

THE SOLUTION

SAIT's new Trades and Technology Complex will engage up to 8,100 more full and part-time students each year in hands-on, career-oriented training through an additional 3,600 new student spaces.

Within 10 years, SAIT can deliver more than 20,000 additional skilled trades people, technicians and technologists to industry - generating billions of dollars in gross domestic product.
